| February 28, 2010 | Obama: If GOP doesn't cooperate, we'll go it alone THE SUMMIT TAKEAWAY - Disciplined Republicans came off looking more like principled opponents than foaming-at-the-mouth obstructionists. And though they griped about it, Republicans were probably helped by President Obama's penchant for monopolizing the microphone. Obama fielded almost every rebuttal, leaving both Republicans and Democrats to speak when spoken to. As a group, Democrats focused on the "why" of health reform instead of the "how." Their stories about real people struggling with health insurance did little to explain how their legislation would make things better. And it remains difficult to see how the summit changed the underlying politics, which still rely largely on winning over Democratic moderates. The meeting itself didn't provide much new cover for wary red-state Democrats. But Obama appears intent on adding some Republican proposals to his bill, a move almost guaranteed to win no GOP votes. That kind of obstinacy might move the needle, Mary Landrieu-style. Earlier this week, the moderate Democrat blasted the GOP's "faux" bipartisanship and signaled a willingness to consider passing reform through reconciliation - a move she had expressed qualms about in past. If Obama can stoke that kind of fire in other moderates, he just might have a shot at passing reform. |

| March 22, 2005 | Hill Attacks Alan. "...When the talk turned to the promising surplus forecasts that Greenspan relied on to support President Bush's 2001 tax cuts, the former First Lady pounced. 'It turns out that we were all wrong,' Greenspan admitted. But Hillary quickly snapped: 'Just for the record, we were not all wrong, but many people were wrong.' Hillary had joined with most of her Democrat colleagues to vote against the 2001 tax cuts, and one of their stated reasons was that the federal deficits would explode. Of course, this was before the 9/11 attacks and the global War on Terror, which helped to both slow economic growth and vastly increase federal spending." |
| March 18, 2005 | With All Due Respect, Mr. President, You're Wrong "At his press briefing Wednesday, Bush again stated that personal retirement accounts are insufficient to make Social Security permanently solvent. With all due respect, Mr. President, you're wrong. The chief actuary of Social Security has scored four separate personal-accounts plans as achieving full solvency without tax increases or benefit cuts." |

| February 3, 2005 | Social Security Reform - What Bush Should Learn - Retirement Expert Offers Unbiased Useful Information Jim Trippon, former senior Price Waterhouse CPA, says "...citizens should be allowed to privatize their retirement funds using only Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS). With TIPS, citizens can invest their money in five, 10 or 20 year terms. Owners receive interest payments every six months and the bonds are protected from inflation, meaning the worth of their retirement investment ultimately cannot be depleted in value." |
| February 3, 2005 | State of the Union Address "The goal here is greater security in retirement, so we will set careful guidelines for personal accounts. We'll make sure the money can only go into a conservative mix of bonds and stock funds. We'll make sure that your earnings are not eaten up by hidden Wall Street fees. We'll make sure there are good options to protect your investments from sudden market swings on the eve of your retirement. We'll make sure a personal account cannot be emptied out all at once, but rather paid out over time, as an addition to traditional Social Security benefits. And we'll make sure this plan is fiscally responsible, by starting personal retirement accounts gradually, and raising the yearly limits on contributions over time, eventually permitting all workers to set aside four percentage points of their payroll taxes in their accounts." |
